MEN’S SOCCER
The Forester men’s soccer team picked up its first league win in convincing fashion Saturday night under the lights at Wildcat Field with a 2-0 clean sheet over Indiana Wesleyan (6-3-1, 0-1-1).
The Wildcats weren’t able to crack HU’s stubborn defense with Gabe Greenfield standing tall in frame to with four saves to earn his fourth shutout of the year. It’s just the second time IWU has been held scoreless this year.
“Defensively, we were a collective effort through all units,” said Coach Lawson. “Our back line was tight and compact. Sovine, Hurtis, Brown, Rippe and Lins Souza were fantastic.
“Indiana Wesleyan has lots of weapons through the run of play and on restarts and the boys did a fantastic job of winning the battles.”
Offensively, Huntington had fewer shots, nine to their hosts’ 13, but made the most of their opportunities. Ty Sproat struck first for Lawson’s crew when Jordan Morris used his speed to get the edge on his defender to slot the ball into the box where Sproat met up with it for the easy tap-in at the 37:53 mark.
Sproat has five goals on the year. Jake Erlandson then put the finishing touches on the win when he roofed a ball into the top corner on a scramble after a corner kick midway through the second half.
“Our effort was fantastic tonight,” said Lawson. “It’s always great to get the first conference win and now we have to adjust, take care of our bodies and get ready for a strong Marian team who’s also coming off a win.”
HU (6-4-1, 1-1) hosts the Knights on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
