MEN’S SOCCER
The Huntington men’s soccer team picked up their fourth win over the season with a 3-1 decision over IU East Wednesday night under the lights at Centerville High School, the Red Wolves’ home pitch.
This is IU East’s second year for a program and their second loss to the Foresters as Lawson’s crew handed the Red Wolves a 6-0 loss last season.
Play was one-sided for the majority of the evening and the payoff was HU’s first goal in the 27th minute when Luke Unger, after breaking down the wing back, got his own rebound from a blocked shot for the put back.
Unger was rewarded again just after halftime for being in the right place at the right time. It was another rebound, this time Matheus Louzada’s blast that struck the post on a restart, that he pounced on for his second goal of the day and a 2-0 HU lead.
The Red Wolves would cut the lead in half ten minutes later but HU had one more score in them to protect the W. Ty Sproat played a fantastic ball into Noah Fleming who slotted the keeper on a breakaway to cushion the lead back to two at the 69:35 mark.
When all the dust settled, the Foresters logged 24 shots, 14 on target, to IU East’s five, three on goal, as more evidence of HU’s dominance.
“This was a well-played game where we controlled possession from start to finish,” said Lawson. “I felt like the boys were focused. We were able to get numbers up consistently forcing some quality saves.
“I really liked how dynamic and versatile we were in our attack. We broke them down in multiple ways.”
Gabe Greenfield picked up the win in frame having given up just one goal while collecting a pair of saves in 90 minutes of play.
HU (4-2) is back in action on Saturday to host Michigan-Dearborn at 3:00 p.m.
