WOMEN’S SOCCER
Freshman Ashtyn Patrick’s golden goal just over a minute into double overtime sent the sideline of the HU women’s soccer team into a frenzy at Wildcat Stadium Tuesday evening in addition to sending them home with a 2-1 win over Lourdes University.
Matea Knispel setup the game-winner with a beautiful cross into the center of the goal mouth that Patrick was able to bury for the abrupt ending. It was Patrick’s second goal of the year and first game-winner of her young career.
Regulation saw the Foresters strike first at the 10:20 mark when Courtney McKown buried Patrick’s shot that rebounded off the crossbar for an early 1-0 lead. That advantage would last just over 20 minutes before Lourdes countered to knot up at 1-1 in the 31st minute.
The matchup between these two squads was the first in program history and didn’t disappoint. For the Gray Wolves, it was their second 2OT game of the year and HU’s first. Both teams logged double-digit shots with Huntington owning a 20-14 advantage in shots taken and a 9-5 tilt in shots on frame.
Danielle Dehner earned the win in goal for the visitors, her second W of the year. She went the distance to give up just one goal while collecting four saves in over 101 minutes of play.
“Although we got the win tonight, our performance until overtime was less than satisfactory,” said Coach Burge. “However, led by our seniors, the players truly pulled together in overtime. We laid it all out on the field for a love of the game and a love for our family which was incredible to watch!
“I’m proud of how they came together with gut and grit in the end to push each other to finish strong in a game that was a battle from start to finish.”
The Foresters (2-5) return to the friendly confines of King Stadium on Saturday to host #RV Trinity Christian at 1:00 p.m.
