WOMEN’S GOLF

The Forester women’s golf team kicked off its season over the weekend with an 8th place finish at the Indiana Wesleyan Fall Invitational at Arbor Trace Golf Course. Sholund’s crew shaved off five strokes from the first to second day by posting a 337 on Friday before firing a 332 on Saturday for an overall score of 669.

Leading the way for Huntington was Betsy Schroeder with a 163 (81, 82). The Fort Wayne native tied for 17th out of 93 golfers.

HU’s next three scores were within five strokes of each other, with Alexandria Maris firing a 167 (83, 84) for 32nd, Rachel Blauert posting a 168 (85, 83) for 36th and Leah Thompson carding a 171 (88, 83) for 50th.

In her collegiate debut, Olivia Kreiger turned in a 176 (84, 92) to finish 62nd. Other scores for HU included Megan Higgins (89-94–183) and Alayna Steeley (101-109–210).

Overall, Coach Sholund was pleased with his team’s play. “The team made great strides as a program today, but we do have some things to work on to get us to the next level.

“We are letting bad momentum stretch for too many holes, and we need to execute better around the greens. We have a great foundation to build on with this good start to the year!”

It was a field of 16 teams with Taylor claiming the title with a 628 followed by Saint Francis (630), Indiana Wesleyan (631), Campbellsville (635), Olivet Nazarene (649), Grace (650), Spring Arbor (668), HU (669), Indiana Wesleyan B (673), UNOH (675), Taylor B (691), Trine (692), Siena Heights (706), Rend Lake (711), Mount Vernon (724) and Kalamazoo (844).

HU will host its own invitational, Battle at Brookwood, on September 10-11.
