BASEBALL
The 3rd-seeded Huntington baseball team is playing some of its best ball of the year at the Crossroads League Tournament as evidenced by Monday night’s convincing 11-3 win over top-seeded Indiana Wesleyan at Taylor’s Winterholter Field. The loss kicks the Wildcats out of the tourney while the Foresters are back in action tomorrow to face 2nd-seed Taylor University at 3PM.
Pitching was again on point for Frame’s crew. This time it was Mason Shinabery who tossed a dandy. The sophomore hurler gave up just one hit through the first five frames before giving way to a two-run blast in the sixth. When all was said and done, he allowed five hits, three runs and one walk while posting a career-high 12 strikeouts for the nine-inning complete-game win.
Huntington’s display at the plate was equally impressive. The Foresters have scored at least ten runs in three of their first four tournament contests. For the Wildcats, it was just the third time this year they have given up double-digit runs.
HU put the pressure on IWU right away by opening up a 5-0 lead. With two outs, Adam Roser got his team started with a solo shot in the top of the first. A Hunter Losekamp single up the middle was followed by back-to-back walks to set the stage for Tyler Zimske’s rocket to deep left-center that brought all three of his teammates home and landed him on third. It was icing on the cake for the senior first baseman as a passed ball allowed him to easily score.
The eighth was another big inning for the Foresters as they found home four more times with the first run on Donovan Clark’s RBI-single while the rest came at the bat of Jamar Weaver. With bases loaded, the Westview product uncorked a blast to deep left-center for a three-run double.
Weaver finished with four RBI while ZImske logged three. Roser added two hits and two RBI. Clark registered two hits and an RBI in addition to scoring three times. Five of HU’s nine hits were for extra bases.
With tonight’s win, the Foresters improve to 21-23 on the year.
