MEN’S GOLF

The Huntington men’s golf team wrapped up its season with a seventh place finish at the Crossroads League Tournament. The Foresters posted a 313 in round one, followed up with another 313 before shooting a 318 on Tuesday to finish with an overall score of 944.

The tournament, hosted by Taylor University, was played at Purgatory Golf Club n Noblesville, Ind.

Cale Carr led Coach Sholund’s crew with a 15-over-par 231 (78, 77, 76). Zakry Cummings had a solid outing by firing a 233 (75, 78, 80).

Zach Borntreger, in his last collegiate outing, posted HU’s lowest score of the tourney by carding a 73 in the first round. The senior finished with a 235 which included an 80 and 82 in his final two rounds.

Of his lone senior, Sholund had nothing but good things to say about Borntreger. “Zach has been a player every coach and conference would love to have.

“I know he has made an impression on every coach in the league as well as most every player. He has been widely regarded as one of the most positive players in the Crossroads League and it has been a blessing to watch him become the player and leader he is. It was good to see him end his college career with a strong tournament.”

Rounding out HU’s top five was Andrew Weisheit with a 245 (87, 78, 80) and Nick Whitney with a 261 (90. 85, 86).

“We made a lot of progress as a whole this week,” noted Sholund. “The team did an outstanding job on the final nine which makes the offseason a bit more enjoyable.”

Taylor ran away with the title by firing an 854 followed by Indiana Wesleyan (884), Saint Francis (899), Marian (902), Mount Vernon (919), Spring Arbor (920), HU (944) and Bethel (962).
