The HU track and field program competed in the 113th annual Little State Championships hosted by Indiana Wesleyan over the weekend. The Forester men finished 7th out of 14 teams while the women took 11th. Little State is comprised of Indiana schools from the NAIA, NCAA Division II and Division III and Junior Colleges.

Freshman Peyton Depriest earned points in three events to pace the Foresters. He sprinted his way to a 4th place finish in the 400 meters by clocking in at 49.62, the 4th fasted time in HU history.

He also took 5th in the 200 meters in 22.79 and was a part of the 4×100 meter relay team along with Heath Atkins, Bradey Gerke and Avniel Barrow claimed 2nd in an HU record time of 42.58.

Barrow broke the 11-second barrier in the 100 meters to register the 2nd fastest time with a 10.95.

The 4×800 meter relay team of Codi Wiersema, CJ Robertson, Nick Childs and Adrien Gentrie finished 7th in 8:23.89 to round out HU’s points in running events.

Brooks Gerke’s mark of 14-07.25 in pole vault was good for 2nd place. He also earned a point in javelin by finishing 8th with his toss of 139-04.

Other point getters for Huntington included Bradey Gerke in triple jump (3rd, 41-00.25), Adam Woods in javelin (6th, 145-04) and Luke Fillers in pole vault (four-way tie for 7th, 13-01.50).

The University of Indianapolis claimed the men’s title with 141.25 points followed by Indiana Wesleyan (134.5), Bethel (100.75), Trine (77), Taylor (71), Vincennes (66), HU (44.75), Anderson (41), Grace (36.75), Wabash (34), Indiana Tech (31), Saint Francis (28), Goshen (3) and IU Kokomo (1).

The Forester women earned five points in the 100 meters with Nicole Pennington (12.79) and Benedicte Nzombi-Fenner (12.91) finishing 5th and 8th respectively.

The 4×800 meter relay team of Bianca Tisdale, Jordan Adam, Rachael Smelser and Erin Manchess posted a time of 11:10.19 to place 4th. Elise Cormany took 8th in pole vault (9-08) as did Brooke Saylor in javelin (98-03).

The University of Indianapolis ran away with the women’s title with 180 points followed by Indiana Wesleyan (136.5), Taylor (123), Vincennes (72), Indiana Tech (61), Trine (59.5), Saint Francis (51), Bethel (29), Anderson (18), Grace (16), HU (12), Goshen (10), IU Kokomo (8) and Marian (6).

Coach Childs’ crew is back in action on Saturday to compete in the Lancer Invitational.
