WOMEN’S GOLF

The HU women’s golf team made history Tuesday afternoon by winning its first event in the program’s three-year life. The Foresters fired a 336 at the Ackerman-Allen Shoot Out hosted by Taylor University to claim Huntington’s first ever title.

Leah Thompson topped the leaderboard by carding a 77 to earn medalist honors, just the second time in HU’s history a women’s golfer has accomplished such a feat. Abby Poole turned in an 83. Alexandria Maris posted an 86 while Betsy Schroeder and Megan Higgins finished with a 90 and 92 respectively.

“I am so excited for this team,” said Coach Sholund. “They did a great job today! We have been competing with teams that are ranked higher than us most of the spring and today we did a better job of limiting mistakes to pull through for the win.

“Our program is only three years old and this is just simply a big step forward for us. I hope the ladies really enjoy this for the next day or two while we get ready to compete at Brookwood this weekend on our home course.”

HU finished five strokes ahead of second place Indiana Wesleyan (341) followed by Taylor (346) and Holy Cross (362).

The Foresters host the Battle at Brookwood April 20-21 before wrapping up the year with the Crossroads League Tournament on April 30 – May 1.
