The Forester men’s and women’s golf team spent the first part of spring break in Tennessee to compete in the Phoenix Invitational at Old Hickory Country Club hosted by Cumberland University where the HU men claimed 9th and the women finished 11th.

The Forester men fired a 315 on Monday to sit in a tie for seventh but slipped a few spots after Tuesday’s round of 320 to finish with a team total of 635. Cale Carr paced Sholund’s crew with a 154 (75, 79) to claim 23rd out of 90 golfers.

Andrew Weisheit (78, 77) and Zach Borntreger (77, 79) shot within a stroke of each other to post a 25th-place 155 and 29th-place 156 respectively. Zakry Cummings fired an 85 both days to card a 170 while Nick Whitney rounded out Huntington’s scoring with a 184 (94, 90).

Cumberland claimed the title by turning in a 595 followed by Martin Methodist (600), Tennessee Wesleyan (606), Pikeville (606), Faulkner (619), Campbellsville (620), Asbury (629), Midway (631), HU (635) and Shawnee State (640).

The Huntington women carded a 725 for the invitational, a single stroke behind 10th-place Martin Methodist, by shooting a 368 on Monday and a 357 on Tuesday. It was a balanced attack for the Foresters with Leah Thompson leading the way with a 180 (91, 89) good for 49th out of 61 golfers followed by Betsy Schroeder with a 181 (90, 91).

Alexandria Maris shot a 182 (94, 88) with Abby Poole on her heels at 183 (94, 89). Megan Higgins posted a 192 (93, 99) to round out HU’s scoring.

Dalton State won the women’s title with a 621 followed by William Carey (628), Taylor (643), Cumberland (645), Faulkner (650), Brenau (652), Trevecca Nazarene (662), Bethel (678), Asbury (688), Martin Methodist (724), HU (725) and Shawnee State (761).

Both teams are back in action on April 7 at the Mount Vernon Nazarene University Cougar Classic.
