BOWLING

College bowling’s post-season play was in full swing this past weekend with four sectional tournaments held around the country to determine the 16 teams to compete for the Helmer Cup in Lincoln, NE.

Both Forester teams were in action at the Smyrna (TN) site but were not able to finish high enough to move on to the Intercollegiate Championship tournament. The tournament format was a grueling 64 baker games bowled over two days on a very demanding shot.

“We had some pretty high expectations coming into this tournament, but our inexperience got the best of us at times,” said Coach Shockey. “We all learned quite a bit this weekend and will be more willing to play all the necessary angles to score.”

The HU women finished the weekend 12th out of the 16-team field. Huntington bowled a total score of 11,146 for a 174 per game average. They enjoyed their best block of games on Sunday morning by scoring 2,886 for 16 games (180 average/game).

“The team started Saturday morning slow and we found ourselves playing catch up the rest of the weekend,” said Shockey. “After the Saturday morning block, we did pretty well at maintaining our position, but never really found the strings of strikes needed to catch the top four teams.”

The Forester men claimed 11th out of 16 teams with a total score of 11,866 for a 185 per game average. They had their best block of games on Saturday afternoon with a 16-game total of 3,104 (194 game average).

“Like the ladies, the men struggled right at the start and were never able to make and sustain any kind of momentum to move up in the standings,” noted Shockey.

Shockey’s crew will wrap up the season with the NAIA Team Championships to be held at Plaza Lanes in Hammond, Ind. March 29-April 1.
