WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The Crossroads League announced its post-season awards for the 2017-18 basketball season as voted on by the coaches with the list including four Foresters in Brooke Saylor, Maddie Richer, Sarah Fryman and Sam Hammel.

Topping the list was Saylor who was tabbed Second Team All-Conference. The 5-10 junior forward was HU’s second leader scorer at 10.4 points per game but it was her work on the glass that put her on the map. She pulled down nearly 12 boards per game to rank 2nd in the NAIA in rebounding (11.8).

Not surprising, Saylor leads the league in both offensive and defensive rebounding by averaging 3.2 and 8.6 boards respectively. She also tops her conference peers in blocks by swatting 1.5 shots per game. The Marion native (Eastbrook HS) is second in the league in double doubles with 15 and boasts the top spot in stellar rebounds in a contest with 21, a feat she accomplished twice this season.

Richer was Huntington’s floor general this season and her play earned her a Third Team All-Conference badge. The 5-4 junior guard tossed in 9.6 points per outing and averaged a team-best 3.0 assists, 2.2 rebounds and 1.1 steals.

The Wauseon (Ohio) native (Wauseon HS) led the team from deep with 59 trifectas. She knocked down 46.1 percent of her attempts, the best percentage in the league and 10th best in the NAIA. She averaged two treys per night for the 7th spot in the CL for threes made per game. Richer also ranks 7th in assists in the CL with her 3.0 average.

Joining Richer on the Third Team was Fryman. The 5-9 forward is best known for her offensive prowess. She posted a team-high 14.1 points per night to rank 9th in the league in scoring. She’s been one of the best in the nation at the charity stripe this year where she went 79-for-88 for 89.8 percent to rank 2nd in the NAIA, 1st in the league.

Fryman (Huntington, IN, Huntington North HS) currently ranks 5th in the conference in field goal percentage (.470). In addition to putting points on the board for Culler’s crew, she also finished the year averaging 3.8 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 0.9 steals per outing.

Hammel splashed onto the scene this season as HU’s spark plug off the bench and for her efforts was named to the All-Freshmen Team. The 5-7 guard averaged 7.3 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists in her rookie season. The Anderson native (Pendleton Heights HS) was a pest on defense; averaging 1.6 steals per night and often called on to defend one of the opponent’s top players.

Huntington finished the year with an overall record of 16-14.
