WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The #RV HU women’s basketball team wrapped up its regular season in disappointing fashion Saturday afternoon by suffering a 73-67 loss to Mount Vernon Nazarene University on a day that was dedicated to honoring seniors Hailey Krewald and Brooke Yoder.

Seven turnovers in the first seven minutes proved disastrous for the Foresters as it allowed the Cougars to run out to a 15-5 lead and establish themselves as a force to be reckoned with. They extended the lead to as many as 13 near the end of the quarter before Huntington slowly climbed back in it. HU spent the majority of the second quarter trimming the excess off MVNU’s lead to head into intermission down by five at 34-29.

Behind four points from Maddie Richer, the Foresters raced out of the gates to start the third to claim their first lead of the day at 35-34 by the 8:22 mark. They seized the moment and four minutes later, it looked like Culler’s crew had righted their wrong as the scoreboard favored the hosts by nine, 45-36.

But as quick as they had built that advantage, it came tumbling down as the Cougars one-upped them with a 14-3 run to close out the quarter. It resulted in a 50-48 Mount Vernon lead heading into the fourth where, minus two brief possessions and four ties, the Cougars clung to an advantage throughout to claim the six-point win.

Sarah Fryman tallied 19 points and five steals to lead HU. Brooke Saylor netted 12 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the double double. Thirteen rebounds brings her season total to 347 which sets a new program record for rebounds in a season. The old record was 345 held by Becky Stump dating back to 1983-84.

The 5-10 junior also registered a team-best four assists and game-high three blocks. Hailey Krewald added 12 points while Richer and Sam Hammel each tossed in nine.

Taylor Gregory topped the visitors with 19 points and six rebounds. Rachel Perry came off the bench to collect 17 points, Sierra Basista recorded 15 and Dani Ellerbrock finished with 13.

The Foresters wrap up the regular season with an overall record of 16-13. They finished 9-9 in the league for the fifth spot in the standings and will travel to 4th-seed Grace on Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off in first round action of the Crossroads League tournament.
