BOWLING

Freshman Austin Schultz had a breakout performance over the weekend at the Cincinnati Collegiate Classic to guide the Forester men’s bowling team to a 5th place finish out of 22 teams.

The Valparaiso native posted a score of 2,023 over nine games for a 224 average to claim second overall individually and for his efforts was named to the All-Tournament team.

“Austin has been solid all season and this weekend he was able to apply all the lessons learned so far in his young collegiate career,” said Coach Mike Shockey.

Another rookie in Dustin Yocum was also able to snag a top 10 finish over weekend with his 198 average. He recorded a 1,788 good for 10th place. As a team, Huntington finished the weekend with a pin total of 8,821.

“This weekend was a best overall weekend for the guys this season,” said Shockey. “We have had games and blocks where we showed what we are capable of, but this was the most consistent we have been for an entire tournament.”

The tournament was a little atypical in that the weekend didn’t include any baker games, only nine traditional games.

On the women’s side, HU finished 7th out of 18 teams with a total score of 7,973 behind junior Brianna Cearbaugh. The right-hander averaged 196 over nine games to finish 14th individually.

Competing against some of the nation’s best which included eight Top 40 teams, the Foresters were in 8th after day one before moving up a spot by Sunday’s end. Currently, the HU women are ranked 33rd in the nation and are poised to earn both USBC and NAIA postseason berths.

“Both teams this weekend took big steps forward in showing the work we’ve done since the first practice of the season,” said Shockey. “We did a good job playing the patterns, communicating with each other and bowling together as a team.”

The Foresters are back in action this weekend at the McKendree Baker Challenge in Fairview Heights, Ill.
