The Forester track and field team kicked off 2018 at the Defiance College Invitational over the weekend where the men claimed 5th out of eight teams while the women finished 8th.

Sophomore Avniel Barrow was a double winner for Huntington. Barrow established a new PR in the 60 meters with his 1st place finish time of 7.08. He then teamed up with CJ Robertson, Peyton Depriest and Bradey Gerke to win the 4×200 meter relay by clocking in at 1:32.86.

Depriest also brought home two golds. In addition to winning the 4×200 meter relay, the rookie also sprinted to a 1st place finish in the 200 meters with a time of 23.02 which is a new PR and moves him from 3rd to 2nd in the HU record books.

Senior Brooks Gerke, competing unattached, took 1st in the pole vault with a mark of 15-00.25. He bettered his best by over five inches and upped the school record accordingly.

Codi Wiersema ran a 4:34.63 in the mile to finish 2nd. Two other Foresters in Rodrigo Manzo (6th, 4:42.25) and Adrien Gentrie (7th, 4:44.55) also earned points for HU in that race.

The 4×400 meter relay team of Robertson, Depriest, Gentrie and Elijah Chesterman crossed the line 4th in 3:35.66.

Other point getters for Coach Childs’ crew included Adam Woods in the 60 meters (7th, 7.32) and high jump (6th, 6-00.00), Luke Fillers in pole vault (4th, 12-06.25), Kody Ahrens in the 3,000 meters (5th, 9:50.72), Heath Atkins in the 200 meters (7th, 23.82) and Zach Williams in shot put (8th, 40-04).

Adrian claimed the men’s title with 116 points followed by Albion (111), Grace (101), Saint Francis (72), Huntington (65), Alma (57), Defiance (48) and Olivet (45).

A partial roster competed for the HU women with Nicole Pennington topping the list. The senior speedster took 3rd in the 60 meters with a time of 8.23. She also earned points in the 200 meters by finishing 6th in 27.76.

Mariah Harter also ran the 60 meters where she finished 7th by clocking in at 8.40. Mara McFarland was the only other Forester to earn points with her 8th place finish in the 60 meter hurdles (10.87).

Albion won on the women’s side with 132 points followed by Adrian (129), Alma (92), Saint Francis (75), Defiance (55), Olivet (51), Grace (24) and Huntington (12).

The Foresters are back in action this weekend when they compete in the Don & Riley Zimmer Classic hosted by Trine University.
